    The Savannah, Albany, and Gulf Railroad had previously operated under its own name between Savannah and Thomasville. At the start of , workers had graded the main line route to a point within about 5 miles ( km) from Bainbridge. 15 miles (24 km) of the portion west of Thomasville already had crossties on the : United States Wiregrass Region of Georgia.
